Penknife or Razor on Glass Doors
We install vinyl stickers on glass doors as part of our work as an outdoor advertising contractor. We use penknifes or razors on the glass doors to cut and peel away excess stickers. My installers insist that this method of cutting the stickers will not damage the glass. Is that true?
But I have so much complaints on hand now on scratched glass doors now. What explains the scratches on the glass door when the stickers are wholly removed at the end of the campaign? |

TMP Products,
Regarding installing vinyl stickers on window glass, this SHOULD not cause any problems. Even with using a razor blade for removal.
BUT, in the past several years, many glass fabricators have done a VERY poor job on house keeping in their plants and this has resulted in defective glass surfaces, which causes scratching to the glass surface with razor blade use during normal window cleaning procedures.
The scratching is actually caused from fabricating debris from the heat-treating process, which should have been washed off prior to entering the tempering furnace, NOT the razor blade.
To prove my point, you never have this glass scratching problem with annealed or laminated glass, do you?
That's because they don't have fabricating debris on the surface and they don't get heat-treated, which would fuse the debris to the surface and cause the surface DEFECT.
You will also notice, most scratching is only on ONE surface of the glass, even if you used a razor blade on both sides. That's because the defective surface is only located on the glass surface that was in contact with the furnace rollers.

Good luck,
